- I just found this place (maybe Howard shouldn't have made Tapcis blast
- by What's New?) and am delighted at the resources here.
- I'm a sysop of Safetynet - CompuServe's firefighter, industrial safety,
- industrial health, and environmental forum; an industrial hygienist and a
- freelance writer. My interest in CD ROM is to research and review applications
- in industrial hygiene and occupational health. I'm using a Philips CM 100 and
- have some of the SilverPlatter health databases.

- P.S. Glad to see the article on stock photography/CD-ROMs in PHOTO DISTRICT
- NEWS. Haven't had a chance to do more than skim it yet; does the writer
- somewhere make it clear that the CD-ROM contains not the color photos but
- rather b/w DTP files scanned-in from the photos?

- I am looking to purchase a CDROM system for use in our poison control center
- using MICROMEDEX's Poisondex database in the near future. The computer will be
- dedicated to the Poison Control center. Does anyone sell complete systems with
- internal cdrom drives that would be compatible with MICROMEDEX's software? If
- anyone has any information and or suggestions on putting together and
- ecomonical but reliable system for this purpose, please leave replies... THANKS

- Yes, a fellow by the name of Peter Dyke sells complete systems,

- can go with it. He checks in my forum (Safetynet) but I don't have his PPN

- Pierre,
-
- A big reason for the difference in cost of the WORM vs CD ROM disks is that
- the CD ROM disks are just stamped out (like records) and don't have to be
- recordable. WORM disks are entirely different technology because they have
- to be write-able. Leading edge technology, in fact.

- Dear Mark, thanks forthe info, actually the reques came frome a friend here in
- the government . His agency wants to store files on optical media and destroy
- the old copies but can't find legal precedent permitting this. I had heard of
- that trial in SF. Isn't it true that only the judge and clerks made use of the
- system that the attourneys for both sides insisted on paper copies?
- In any case, that wasn't actual evidence and the originals were still
- available. My question relates to making copies then destroying legally
- mandated originals that were to be stored for up to 70 years. jm

- I can appreciate your concern about having most of the files in .ARC format.
- While on this version of the disk there is room still left on the disk still
- that would have allowed the files to be un-archived. I am working with the
- project manager at ALDE on the next version of the PD ROM. The organization
- will be much better and will have even more files. I have contributed the
- files from my board (Over 40 megs worth) and will be assisting with the
- creation of a master file directory and catetory file as required by the File
- Management System used by most RBBS sysops. If everything goes accordingly to
- what we hope, the file directory and category file will be placed onto the CD
- where those sysops who use the PC-SIG CD still have to mess with a 2Meg+ file
- on their hard drive. If you would like to know more about the current version
- of the CD from ALDE, leave a message for me here with your questions or call my
- board Bluegrass RBBS 606-272-0499.

- The last time I looked at the Federal Rules of Evidence, they were tighter than
- the California Evidence Code, and "original" meant original. Again, though,
- the Best Evidence Rule applies only when the *CONTENTS* of a writing are in
- dispute, as opposed to its interpretation or the fact that it exists at all.
- In S.F., I believe that the attorneys had terminals too, and I *think*,
- although I may be wrong, that the evidence was offered and received in digital
- form, not just the pleadings. If I were in your friend's shoes, I'd seek the
- opinion of the Attorney General in his jurisdiction. BTW, still trying to
- raise my credit standing for the Kurzweil Model 30!

- The Sony drives use the same MS Extensions that Hitachi and all the others use.
- The difference between all these drives is that they use proprietary .SYS files
- (drivers). The drivers used for Hitachi will not work on a Sony, and vice

- James, I would look into a commercial WORM solution such as 12" WORM with
- medium speed scanners 12-20 pages per minute depending on resolution. The
- scanner engine I would look for in any system is Fujitsu. This machine gives
- you variable resolution from 100 to 400 DPI and is very friendly with
- light/dark control and other features. The driver interface board to the
- engine should have on board Group 3 and 4 compession so that the image is alway
- kept compressed on disc until it is viewed or printed. A wide variety of disc
- drives are available but the scanner is a major factor in productivity. I
- think that this engine is now integrated into the Imageering Optical Disc
- Systems product line. They are in Memphis Tn. Also when you look at systems
- be sure that the company you select has a rental program. This helps cut down
- on equipment purchases during the "start up" phase of your conversion process
- from paper to optical storage. PS. Fujitsu print engine prints 12-20 pages per
- minute and gets aprox. 50,000 images to a toner cartridge !
